Beginner I

Listening and Speaking:

This course prepares students to speak and comprehend beginning level English by developing the knowledge and understanding of vocabulary, basic grammar structures, and basic conversation.  With the use of practical critical thinking, students will learn key strategies for academic and social communication which support language learning and encourage independence in student thinking. Students will participate in activities where they will use verbal communication to respond to phrases, interactions, and questions in familiar contexts.  These activities will also help students develop important listening skills.  Students will practice taking part in conversations and will learn functional language for a variety of conversational settings.  Students will be introduced to communication for the modern student and the focus will be on real-life and academic communication that will prepare students for success in school and in life.

 

Reading and Writing:

This course prepares students to read and write beginning level English through practice, recycling vocabulary and learning essential strategies and processes.  Students will learn crucial reading skills like skimming for main ideas and finding supporting details.  Students will engage in critical thinking activities that will help them to analyze predications, synthesize and discuss ideas from a variety of reading text, and use graphic organizers to organize ideas in a reading passage.  Students will build their grammar and vocabulary skills and apply information from different sources in a variety of contexts.  Students will practice using high-frequency words to write simple sentences, use basic grammatical agreement, and compose simple paragraphs.

Beginner II

Course Description:

Listening and Speaking:

This course is designed for high-beginner ESL students to improve listening and speaking skills for both academic and professional settings.  Students will practice speaking skills using basic grammatical structures.  They will increase their degree of fluency, accuracy, and comprehension in both listening and speaking.  Students will practice taking part in conversations and learn functional and academic language. Students will listen to a variety of audio content with a focus on interpretation of factual information, drawing inferences, and paraphrasing selected paragraphs. This course will teach strategies on taking notes, getting meaning from context, and using a Venn diagram to compare and contrast.

 

Reading and Writing:

This course is designed for high-beginner ESL students to improve their reading, writing, and comprehension skills.  The course will focus on real-life and academic communication based on engaging readings that will prepare students for success in academic and professional settings.  Students will practice using strategies to determine main ideas and will organize details to understand basic content of a reading passage.  They will increase their degree of fluency, accuracy, and comprehension in their reading skills.  They will read to improve comprehension of a variety of texts with a focus on interpretation of factual information, drawing inferences, and paraphrasing selected passages. This course is designed for high-beginner ESL students to improve communication skills for both formal and informal settings.  Students will practice using basic grammatical structures in writing and begin to use process writing techniques to develop simple paragraphs.  They will begin to explore different writing modes and connect it to their everyday lives.  Students will prepare for their writing by learning corpus-informed academic vocabulary, collocations, and phrases.  This course will help students to recognize that academic writing is all around them. They will also learn how to analyze details to prepare for their own writing.

Intermediate I

Course Description:

Listening and Speaking:

In this course, students will speak and understand with proficiency, English that is used in various social, professional, and academic settings that are associated with colleges, universities, businesses and professions. This Intermediate level course will prepare students for university classes via integration of modern content, digital components, emphasis on vocabulary, and practical critical thinking. Students will engage in activities that will help them develop important listening skills and interpret short conversations related to academic life.  Students will listen to lectures and practice key note-taking skills.  They will focus on social and on trend topics that stimulate active dialogue and discussion.

 

Reading and Writing:

This course will prepare students to read, write, and comprehend with proficiency, English that is used in various social, professional, and academic settings that are associated with colleges, universities, businesses and professions. Students will prepare for university classes via integration of modern content, digital components, emphasis on vocabulary, and practical critical thinking. Students will apply critical thinking skills needed to analyze and synthesize the text for real life situations. Students will learn crucial reading skills like scanning and skimming for main ideas and finding supporting details.  In addition, students will be given tools to master academic writing by practicing foundational academic writing skills essential to writing paragraphs and basic essays.  Students will move through the writing process using outlines to organize and develop their ideas before completing their final drafts. Content will feature writing models that reinforce the concept that writing is purposeful and will provide opportunities for students to progress from basic text to traditional academic writing.  These skills will be vital for academic or professional success.

Intermediate II

Course Description:

Listening and Speaking:

This course is designed to prepare students to communicate independently formally and informally in both academic and professional English language environments.  The course includes instruction in listening and speaking strategies that build academic vocabulary and prepares students for academic and professional success.  A variety of listening activities will give students opportunities to manage comprehension and interpretation of spoken passages and lectures.  Academic themes, vocabulary development, and critical thinking strategies needed to pursue higher education degrees or professional and business careers will be addressed.  In addition, listening and speaking activities that prepare students for success on various college entrance and English proficiency exams will be introduced.

 

Reading and Writing:

The Intermediate II Reading and Writing course is designed to prepare students to independently read content and communicate effectively and independently through writing in both formal and informal English language in academic and professional environments.  This will include instruction in reading and writing strategies that build extended vocabulary usage and descriptive features and prepare students for academic success.  A variety of reading and writing activities will give students opportunities to clarify lengthy passages, stories, and text and to effectively connect writing to their lives and experiences.  Academic themes, social topics, writing topics, vocabulary development and critical thinking strategies needed to pursue higher education degrees or professional and business careers addressed.  This course will demonstrate the use of language chunks, collocations and phrases that will make student writing more natural and academic. In addition, reading and writing activities that prepare students for success on various college entrance and English proficiency exams will be introduced.

 

Advanced I

Course Description:

Listening and Speaking:

This course is designed to prepare students to communicate effectively and independently in both formal and informal English language environments, especially in the academic environment they would encounter at an English-based college or university.  This course includes instruction in listening and speaking strategies that build academic vocabulary and prepares students for academic and professional success.  A variety of listening activities will give students opportunities to effectively manage comprehension and interpretation of lengthy spoken passages.  Academic themes, vocabulary development, and critical thinking strategies needed to pursue higher education degrees or professional and business careers will be addressed.  In addition, listening and speaking activities that prepare students for success on various college entrance and English proficiency exams will be introduced.

 

Reading and Writing:

The Advanced I Reading course is designed to prepare students to effectively and independently read and write content in both formal and informal English language environments, especially in the academic environment they would encounter at an English-based college or university.  This will include instruction in reading and writing strategies that build vocabulary and extended vocabulary usage and prepare students for academic success.  A variety of reading activities will give students opportunities to effectively manage and clarify lengthy passages, stories, and text and writing activities that will give students opportunities to effectively connect academic writing to their lives and experiences.  Academic themes, writing topics, vocabulary development, and critical thinking strategies needed to pursue higher education degrees or professional and business careers will also be addressed.  There will be a focus on the use of language chunks and collocations and phrases that will make student writing more natural and academic. In addition, students will engage in advanced reading and writing activities that prepare students for success on various college entrance and English proficiency exams.
